Welcome to the Lehman College Department of Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education. Today the department houses three outstanding graduate degree programs in counselor education, literacy studies and special education, each culminating in a masters degree. These programs are guided by the Lehman Urban Transformative Education (LUTE) framework. The programs in the department meet the needs of students for academic as well as professional excellence. Providing that all other requirements are met, our graduates are prepared for initial and professional New York State certification as school counselors (K through 12); teachers of literacy (birth through grade 2, grades 1 through 6, or grades 5 through 12); or special education teacher (early childhood - birth through grade 2, childhood - grades 1 through 6, or adolescent - grades 7 - 12). Academic excellence, social equity and developmental responsiveness are keystones of each program.
The faculty in each of our graduate programs has recently reviewed and revised the curricula, assuring that students will receive the highest quality education, aligned with state and national standards. All programs in the Department, as well as in the School of Education, are approved by the National Council on Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Counselor Education program is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Literacy Programs are also aligned with The International Reading Association (IRA). The Special Education Programs are accredited by The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The department has also developed two new graduate programs in educational leadership: the School Building Leader program and the School District Leader program.
Our programs bring together faculty and students who are committed to making a difference in the lives of students in urban school and community settings. Faculty utilizes a variety of teaching strategies to make classes interesting and relevant, and students are critically engaged in both theory and practice throughout their course of studies. We value our relationships with students. The ratio of faculty to students in classes is kept small, and this allows students to develop personal relationships with faculty members who are engaged in research, writing, and professional activities in their discipline. In response to NYSED mandates, the graduate programs in special education have developed a 12-credit extension in teaching for gifted and talented (see extensions and annotations in the catalogue of programs in Special Education).
The graduate programs in counselor education, literacy studies, special education and education leadership have been developed and are evaluated based on the work of an array of theorists and research data as well as experience with best practices in the field. Courses have evolved based on principles of preparing our graduates who will, in their professional roles, demonstrate a commitment to social justice, critical pedagogy and closing the achievement gap.
